The trend monitoring at national level is long-term (> 20 years). There are two different approaches: on the one hand, there are approaches that produce an indicator for the entire agricultural area of Germany, but are only of limited use for regional differentiation, since at best data are used at the level of rural districts and municipalities. On the other hand, there are approaches that provide area-wide information based on nationwide representative sample areas. These include, for example, land-use change, landscape features, crop rota-
tions, use intensity in grassland, water supply and individual groups of organisms. This information should be extrapolated to national indicators as much as possible.
